What is Grand Nada? Suuri tyhjyys. The great nothing.
First time I met ‘Grand Nada’ was back in 2017 in Venice, Italy. I visited an art exhibition called “Intuition”, located in one of those grandiose old buildings, gorgeous palazzo Fortuny. As I stepped into one of the smaller rooms, time stilled. There were no windows, only a dim light and a huge black painting staring back at me. That painting by Thierry de Cordier was called ‘Grand Nada’ and it vibrated with the strangest energy.
I am one of those unfortunate souls who suffers from melancholy from time to time and that painting with its blackness, bleakness, nothingness resonated with me. And I felt as if the painting drew the darkness out of me, into itself, like feeding itself, its void. And afterwards, I felt light. Good. Healed. Happy even.
After that I’ve run into Grand Nada in unexpected places. Not the painting, but the same darkness, the same energy. It’s like meeting an old friend. It has been in the night sky greeting me during the Finnish Polar Night, "Kaamos". Sometimes it says a quick hello, sometimes stays with me for a longer period of time.
The concept of Grand Nada, the great nothingness is engraved into these tracks. Grand Nada represents existential nihilism. There is no predetermined meaning to life.
The only meaning to life is the one that you create yourself. Not the society, not religions, not your friends or family - it’s up to you to decide what is worthy of your while.
So this album, Grand Nada is about staring into the darkness - and deciding for yourself.
